What to Say When You Feel Unheard

Feeling unheard is not solved by talking louder. These sentence starters help you ask for attention without starting a new fight.

Describe the moment, not the person

Lead with what happened: "When the conversation moved on before I finished, I lost the thread." Descriptions of moments can be checked. Verdicts about character can only be defended.

Ask for one specific thing

Replace "you never listen" with a request small enough to say yes to: "Can I have five minutes to finish this thought before we respond?" Specific requests are easy to meet, and each one that is met rebuilds the trust that was missing.

Say what you need to hear

Sometimes the shortest route is honesty: "I do not need you to fix it, I need you to tell me you understand it." It feels vulnerable to be that direct, and it is also the fastest way to stop repeating yourself.
